|Investigation seeking visual solutions to a variety of problems concerning color in two and three dimensions and modes of color appearances, including light and effects in design and theory of design.

- Visually distinguish between hue, value, and chroma.
- Describe color in terms of light and the human visual system.
- Trace the historical development of major color systems.
- Select specific hues to illustrate color principles.
- Describe the psychological aspects and applications of color.
- Identify and describe uses of color in the fine arts.
- You must complete all assignments in the course to get a passing grade.
- All assignments must be completed in the order in which they are due unless prior arrangements have been made with the instructor. Otherwise no credit may be earned for the assignment/s submitted out of order.
- Exams: There are two exams (a midterm exam and a final exam). These exams may be taken online at home, but there is a time limit and they are closed book.
- NOTE: You must earn a minimum score of 60% on the midterm and final exams in order to pass the course.
Remember that this is a three credit-hour class. As such, you will need to dedicate significant time to this course. Plan to spend at least three hours on course content and at least six hours on homework for a total of at least nine hours each week. Be prepared to double your weekly class and study time if you choose an accelerated calendar.

Letter grades for assignments, the final exam, and the course will be determined by the following scale:

Please Note: The grading procedure for this course is based on the total number of points possible. The grading scale is administered equally to all students in the course. Do not expect to receive a grade higher than that earned by your total points. No point adjustments will be made for such things as class participation or other subjective factors.
Extra credit is not available for this course.
This course includes a required midterm exam and a required final exam. Each will be a timed, at-home online exam. Your course materials will give specific information about each exam and make suggestions for test preparation. The course calendar lists the specific date by which you should take each exam.
- You must complete the midterm exam and the final exam by the date(s) specified on the course calendar. If you test late, your instructor may lower your grade or assign you an "F" in the course unless you have made arrangements with him/her for an extension. Daily late points will be deducted for any exam taken late.
- You may take your final exam early if you have completed the assignments ahead of schedule and you have your instructor's permission to do so.
Check your gradebook for specific due dates for your quizzes and exams.
All assignments are listed at the end of each lesson under the "Reading Assignment" and "Assessing Your Learning" headings. The lessons can be accessed from the "Lessons" link on your Course Homepage.
For the submission of the seven (7) original art assignments, you must either drop off your work at the college or send your work via U.S. Mail, as described below. NOTE: All original art assignments will be returned to the student via US Mail at the end of the course.
Distance Learning Drive-thru Drop Box
Distance Learning students can now drop off class assignments (in an appropriately addressed envelope) and return library books, videotapes and/or cassettes at the Distance Learning Drive-thru Drop Box.
The Drive-thru Drop Box is conveniently located along the curb in front of our Rio Salado Administrative office building at 2323 W. 14th Street, Tempe.
All mailed assignments must be properly addressed and mailed with adequate postage. Assignments will not be accepted if postage is due. If you are unsure of the postage required, take the item to the post office and have it weighed.
Your assignments are to be mailed in properly sized envelopes so that your artwork is delivered flat. Do not fold or cut your precious artwork!
Include the course section number and assignment identifier on the envelope below your name and return address. Envelopes that are labeled incorrectly can cause a delay in processing your work. Address your envelope as shown in this example:

Your section number is the four-digit number that appears in the course schedule next to the course number. It also appears on your bill and on the address label on the envelopes you receive from the Course Support Office.
The Course Support staff cannot answer questions about the receipt of specific mail-in assignments. Only your instructor can do so.
Note to Students: Please do not submit more than one assignment in each envelope. Also, be sure to properly address the assignment envelope and be sure to have the proper postage attached as well.
Note to Students: The US Post Office no longer offers Sunday or holiday mail posting, and pick-up does not automatically mean that your envelope will be posted the same day. To be on the safe side, allow extra time: mail early.
Attachment to a Rio Email Message
Note to students: Keep a copy of everything you submit.
- Open your Rio e-mail account by clicking on the "e-mail" button.
- Click on "New / Message" at the top of your Inbox.
- Enter your instructor's name in the "to" field and your name and assignment number in the "subject" field.
- Type the following information in the body of the e-mail

- Your student ID number
- Lab assignment number
- The software program and version you used to complete the assignment
- Click on "Attachments"
- Click on "Browse" under 'Choose a file to attach' and select your filename, then click "Attach." You will see your filename in the 'Current file attachments' box.
- Click "Close," then "Send" to send the message and attachment.
- You can see your sent message by clicking on the "Sent Items" folder.
Hints for Success
Organization of one's time is very personal; however, below is a suggestion for a typical week.
Monday: Review the lesson and make note of any questions you have for your instructor. Read the assigned chapter(s) in your text.
Tuesday: Outline the chapter.
Wednesday: Review the previous day's reading and make notes from which to study. Think about the project assignment and sketch out your ideas.
Thursday: Work on the assignment and follow all assignment criteria.
Friday: Finish assignment by due date. Send your assignment (project and/or essay) to your instructor via Rio Salado College's e-mail communication system or by US Post.
Weekend: Relax and enjoy.
To help you read with maximum efficiency, use the steps outlined below. Using this process for reading your text will increase your interest and help you concentrate on critical ideas and concepts.
- Survey the chapter before reading it.
- Examine the title of the chapter.
- Note headings and subheadings and the relationships among them.
- Read captions under the diagrams, graphs, and visuals.
- Note any questions that come to mind during the survey.
- Take notes: After reading each section in the chapter, write a summary in your own words.
- Using flash cards, write down each key word with its definition and an example utilized in the text.
- Review after you read.
- Review your notes.
- Review your answers to the companion questions.
- Review key terms.
Learning First: the assessment philosophy of Rio Salado College. Final Grade Options
- Letter grade (A, B, C, D, F)-awarded if the student completes all work, including the final exams.
- Extension (in lieu of Incomplete grade) - Students may request an extension because of illness or other extenuating circumstances, if they have been doing acceptable work. The instructor will define the requirements and timelines to complete the course. Please Note: Instructors are not obligated to give extensions.
- Withdrawal-The Students may submit a withdrawal request on or prior to the “Last Date to Withdraw” indicated in their RioLearn Gradebook.
Students should not contact their instructor to request a withdrawal. A student wishing to withdraw from a class within the stated timeline must do so by visiting my.maricopa.edu or by calling Student Enrollment Services at 480.517.8540 (1.800.729.1197 toll-free). In extreme circumstances, students do have the option of requesting a complete withdrawal from the college by providing Student Enrollment Services with appropriate documentation.
- Credit/No Credit Option (P/Z)-This course may be taken on a credit/no credit basis.
To receive Credit "P" grade, students must complete all course work, including exams, and attend all required meetings. A "P" grade is judged to be equivalent to a grade of "C" or higher. A No-Credit "Z" grade will be awarded for course work judged to be below the grade of "C."
To change your grade option, you have 11 days from the start date of your course. As the student, you may change your grade option yourself by following these easy steps:

Step 2 Go to your gradebook
Step 3 During the timeframe that you have to request a grade type change you will see a link that is called "Change Grade Option" at the top of your gradebook. Click on that link and follow the directions to change your grade to the Pass/No-Credit Option.
It is the student's responsibility to request advisement concerning the transferability of a grade of "P" or "Z."

Late or Missing Assignments
Assignments that have due dates are due on time according to the due dates in your gradebook. If you need to request an extension for an assignment, a request must be made to your instructor via RioLearn prior to or on the due date. You can request a due date change from the "Request a Change" link in the "Assessments and Due Dates" section of your Course Homepage. No extensions will be granted to students who opt for the accelerated eight-week version of the course.
Late points may be applied at the instructor's discretion.
Policy Regarding Extra Credit
There are no extra credit assignments for this course and no paper rewrites are allowed in fairness to all. The scheduled assignments and exams are more than sufficient to measure your understanding of the content and concepts presented in the course. You will have a greater understanding of the subjects covered if you put your efforts into these assignments and exams, rather than scattering your energy over a greater number of projects. What we want to achieve is quality, not quantity.
Course Completion Policy
A student who registers for a Distance Learning course is assigned a "start date" and an "end date." It is the student's responsibility to note due dates for assignments and to keep up with the course work. No extensions will be granted to students who opt for the accelerated eight-week version of the course.
If a student falls behind, she/he must contact the instructor and request an extension of her/his end date in order to complete the course.
It is the prerogative of the instructor to decide whether or not to grant the request.
Departmental Plagiarism Statement
Any plagiarized paper will receive a grade of zero with no opportunity for a rewrite! What is plagiarism? Defined briefly, plagiarism is using another's words and passing them off as your own. Defined in more detail, plagiarism is the use of another's words whereby appropriate quotation marks and source citations are not used for documentation. Plagiarism can involve phrases, sentences, paragraphs, or essays taken wholly or in part from another written source. This includes any Internet site! It can be disguised by shifting the word order or the word form of the original source. Students will receive zero credit for any assignment that is found to be plagiarized and will risk course failure. If one written submission is severely plagiarized, course failure may be immediate.

Academic Misconduct includes cheating, conspiring to cheat, soliciting to cheat, attempting to cheat, plagiarism, fabrication on an assignment, or other forms of dishonest presentation.
Posting assessments on an unauthorized web site, soliciting assessment answers and the unauthorized acquisition of assessments, assessment answers, or other academic material is cheating.
Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to, the use of paraphrase or direct quotation of the published or unpublished work of another person without full and clear acknowledgment. It also includes the unacknowledged use of materials prepared by another person or agency engaged in the selling or sharing of term papers or other academic materials. Information gathered from the Internet and not properly identified is also considered plagiarism.
We expect every student to produce his/her original, independent work. Any student whose work indicates a violation of the MCCCD Academic Misconduct Policy (including cheating and plagiarism) can expect sanctions as specified in the college catalog.
Rio Salado College uses software that uncovers plagiarism from student to student and other data sources on the Internet. If a student is found to have plagiarized content, grade consequences will be applied in accordance with departmental policies.
The faculty of Rio Salado place a high value on the importance of general ethical standards of academic behavior and expect that communication between students and instructors or among students shall maintain the level of formality and mutual respect appropriate to any college teaching/learning situation.
Language or behavior that is rude, abusive, profane, disruptive, or threatening will not be tolerated. Activity of this type is Academic Misconduct as defined in MCCCD Policy AR 2.3.11. Students engaging in such behavior will be removed from the course with a failing grade. Additional sanctions may be applied pursuant to AR 2.3.11.

If you receive financial aid of any kind, it is your responsibility to protect your eligibility to receive financial aid by meeting the active participation requirements of this class.
If you are taking this course for Honors credit, you must complete all assessments, including the Honors Project(s). The Honors Project(s) are listed in one or more lessons of the course and are designated for “Honors Students.” Failure to complete the Honors Project(s) will result in a failing grade in the course and a loss of Honors credit.
